Types of Dental Implant Systems

There are three types of dental implant systems:

  1. Endosteal implants: These are the most common dental implant solutions. They are placed into the jawbone, fusing with the bone to create a stable foundation.

  2. Subperiosteal implants: These dental implant systems are placed on top of the jawbone, under the gum tissue. There are options for patients with inadequate jawbone density.

  3. Zygomatic implants: These dental implant solutions are placed in the zygomatic bone located in the cheekbone. This is a complex implant solution for severe jawbone loss.

What’s Included in Dental Implant Solutions

There are three components to a complex implant solution. A complete dental implant solution typically involves:

  1. Implant Screw: Placed into the jawbone to serve as the artificial tooth root. It features a hollow center, allowing an abutment to be securely positioned inside.

  2. Abutments: Connects the implant screw to the final restoration. It is shaped like a small peg or stump that protrudes above the gumline, providing support for crowns, bridges, or dentures.

  3. Final Restoration: This visible part of the dental implant system typically comprises the crown, bridge, or denture.

Implants can be made from various materials, like zirconia and titanium, depending on your patient's needs and budget.

Implant System Customization and Compatibility

An implant system is tailored for each patient, allowing you to collaborate with a dental lab to select the ideal components for your patient's treatment.

Customizable dental implants from a lab can include:

  • Custom Abutments & Titanium Bases: For precise fits and improved aesthetics, especially in the front teeth.

  • Bars and Substructures: Used in full-arch restorations for implant-supported dentures.

  • Mini Implants: Smaller-diameter implants for limited space or bone volume.
